GeneratePress Review (2023) – What’s all the fuzz about?

|

GeneratePress? More like GenerateFresh! Am I right?

Okay, that was a terrible joke, but I promise this GeneratePress review gets better after this.

You know why?

Because GeneratePress generates no stress!

That was the last one, I promise.

Inside joke Michael Scott meme

All joking aside, GeneratePress is one of the lightest and fastest WordPress themes available.

When I first made the switch to GeneratePress, I was able to get rid of a crapload of plugins.

Features and functions that required one could now easily be done using GeneratePress, especially with their Elements feature.

This helped improve my site speed and reduce the risk of getting hacked through a poorly-coded or outdated plugin.

And as you probably know, Google has stated that page speed is a ranking factor.

Here’s everything we’ll cover in this GeneratePress review:

  1. Performance
  2. Features
  3. Premium modules
  4. Schema
  5. Site library templates
  6. Support and documentation
  7. Best plugins for GeneratePress
  8. Pricing
  9. Testimonials and reviews
  10. GeneratePress cons
  11. How to install GeneratePress premium

Disclosure: You should always assume that pretty much every link on this site is an affiliate link, and if you click it and buy something you like, I’ll earn some money to help me buy a DeLorean, build a time machine, and travel back to the 90s so I can watch Hey Arnold! and eat Dunkaroos again.

Fast and lightweight WordPress theme.

Performance

Speed is one of the main reasons bloggers decide to switch to GeneratePress (pretty sure that’s why you’re reading this GeneratePress review).

I ran a few speed tests to compare GeneratePress to Astra, Twenty Twenty, and Ocean WP.

All of the themes were tested out of the box (no customizations at all) using Pingdom’s website speed test.

GeneratePress vs. Astra Speed Test

My first test was GeneratePress vs. Astra, which is another popular and pretty fast WordPress theme.

GeneratePress vs. Astra speed comparison
GeneratePress vs. Astra speed test

As you can see in the image above, GeneratePress beats Astra by 392 ms. It also weighs less and performs fewer requests.

GeneratePress vs. Twenty Twenty

My second test was GeneratePress vs. Twenty Twenty – one of WordPress default themes.

GeneratePress vs. Twenty Twenty speed test comparison
GeneratePress vs. Twenty Twenty speed test

At 1.09 seconds, Twenty Twenty loaded 980 ms slower than GeneratePress and performed 11 requests.

At 86.7 kb, Twenty Twenty also has a larger page size.

GeneratePress vs. OceanWP Speed Test

My last test was against OceanWP.

GeneratePress vs. OceanWP speed test
GeneratePress vs. OceanWP speed test

OceanWP ended up with an 823 ms load time, which is 713 ms slower than GeneratePress. It also performed 20 requests and had a larger page size at 258.8 kb.

Speed Test Summary

Here are all the load times together:

  • GeneratePress: 110 ms
  • Astra: 502 ms
  • OceanWP: 823 ms
  • Twenty Twenty: 1.09 s

As you can see, GeneratePress was the fastest and lightest out of all of these other popular themes, followed by Astra, OceanWP, and Twenty Twenty.

Features

In this section of the GeneratePress review, we’ll go over some of the features that set the theme apart, such as:

  1. Integration with WordPress’ default customizer
  2. Mobile responsive
  3. Disable unused elements and features
  4. Compatibility with page builders
  5. Compatibility with popular plugins
  6. Great support
  7. Hook Elements
  8. Detailed documentation for DIYers
  9. Translation ready
  10. Accessibility ready
  11. Extremely lightweight

1. Smooth Integration with WordPress’ Customizer

GeneratePress’ customization options are automatically integrated into WordPress’ default customizer.

This means that you can make all the changes you need in one place without having to waste time learning a different interface.

For example, other themes like Divi completely replace WordPress’ customizer with their own builder.

And not only do you have to spend time learning how to use it, but once you decide to switch themes in the future, all that knowledge becomes useless.

If you’re new to WordPress, the customizer is the place where you customize the appearance of your website.

There, you can change things like your fonts, colors, menus, widgets, layout, and more.

2. Mobile Responsive

Right off the bat, the GeneratePress theme will make your website adapt to different screen sizes without you having to change any settings.

GeneratePress theme on different screen sizes
Mobile responsive design

But if you do need to make adjustments, the theme gives you the option to do so as well.

“Christian, why is this important?”

Well, I’m glad you asked!

More and more people are looking at content on their phones.

Internet usage by device line graph
Internet usage by device

According to data gathered from SimilarWeb, 63% of internet searches happen via mobile or tablet.

And that number might be even higher depending on your traffic sources.

For example, 82.9% of users visit my fitness site from their mobile devices, but that’s because I also use Pinterest to drive traffic.

Sessions by device
Sessions by device

Plus, Google itself mentioned that starting July 2018, page speed was going to be a ranking factor for mobile searches.

Having a fast and mobile responsive theme is a must nowadays.

3. Disable Unused Elements and Features

Today’s most popular themes are popular because they’re “multipurpose.”

Unfortunately, themes that add a lot of features to try to appeal to everyone tend to be huge in size and slow, which affects your SEO.

People rarely use all the features a theme comes with, so they should be able to disable unused ones.

There’s no point in loading something that isn’t being used.

Even though GeneratePress is fast even with all the modules activated, it’s nice to know you can disable unused ones if you want.

Google Fonts Example

Most themes will load Google fonts even if you’re not using them, that alone can add up to 500 ms of load time.

People often have to install plugins to prevent them from loading.

With GeneratePress, you don’t have to do anything. If you’re not using Google fonts, it simply won’t load them.

4. Plays Nice with Page Builders

I’m not a big fan of drag-and-drop page builders, but if you love using them, you’ll be happy to know that GeneratePress works great with page builders like Elementor and Beaver Builder.

In fact, their Site Library has several templates that were made using Elementor and Beaver Builder. (more on this later)

5. Compatible with Popular Plugins

Looking to start an eCommerce site? GeneratePress works great with WooCommerce.

Looking to make your website multilingual? GeneratePress is compatible with WPML and Polylang.

6. Great Support

Tom and the GeneratePress team will do everything in their power to make sure you’re satisfied with the theme and getting the most out of it.

I’ll go into more detail in the Support and Documentation section of this GeneratePress review.

7. Elements

Elements are one of the most powerful features of the GeneratePress theme. This basically allows you to add things anywhere you want on your website.

For example, you could add a hero header with a call-to-action on every blog post.

People often use a plugin to achieve this or pay someone to code it for them.

We’ll cover Elements in more detail in the next section.

8. Detailed Documentation for DIYers

Tom and the GeneratePress team have put together a very detailed and organized documentation to help you get the most out of the theme.

I’ll talk more about this in the Support and Documentation section of this GeneratePress review.

9. Translation Ready

The GeneratePress theme is translated into over 20 languages. Plus, it fully supports right-to-left (RTL) languages.

10. Accessibility Ready

GeneratePress follows WCAG 2.0 standards to make sure that your website is accessible to everyone visiting it, which is crucial to your site and can help with SEO.

11. Super Lightweight Theme

A default WordPress install with the GeneratePress theme is less than 30 kb in size.

This makes it one of the lightest WordPress themes available.

Premium Modules

While the GeneratePress theme is free, their premium version is where the real fun is at.

The premium version is $59 for a year of support and updates, and you get 13 different modules that you can use on up to 500 websites.

Yes, $59 for 500 sites.

Pretty sweet, right?

In fact, it used to be that you could use it on unlimited sites, but people were abusing it and giving free licenses away, so they’re now cutting at 500, which is still a lot, though.

Here are the 13 modules we’ll cover in this section of the GeneratePress review:

  1. Backgrounds
  2. Blog
  3. Colors
  4. Copyright
  5. Disable Elements
  6. Elements
  7. Menu Plus
  8. Secondary Nav
  9. Sections
  10. Site Library
  11. Spacing
  12. Typography
  13. WooCommerce

1. Backgrounds

This module adds an option called Background Images in your customizer.

Here, you’ll find a list of sections for each element on your site, such as body, navigation, content, sidebar, and footer.

Once you click on an element, you’ll be able to select a background image for it and customize it.

How to Access It: Customizer > Background Images

2. Blog

Next module in this GeneratePress review is the Blog module.

The Blog module will add more layout customization options for both your individual blog posts and your blog page (archive).

Here, you’ll be able to select if you want to display the post date, author, categories, tags, and navigation.

You’ll also be able to select whether to display an excerpt or not, and how many characters it should have.

The option to display featured images and where you want them will be found here as well.

3. Colors

The Colors module will add even more functionality to the default colors from the free version of GeneratePress.

Here, you’ll be able to change the color for different elements, such as the body, header, navigations, buttons, content, sidebar, widgets, forms, and footer.

The options found on each will vary depending on the element.

A few of the most common options you’ll find are to change the color of the background, text, hover, text hover, navigation search, and background current.

4. Copyright

The next module in this GeneratePress review is the Copyright module.

This module will allow you to easily add a copyright notice in the footer of your website.

How to Access It: Layout > Footer > Copyright

5. Disable Elements

The Disable Elements module will allow you to disable specific elements on your individual pages and blog posts.

This is great for creating Landing Pages.

Many “six-figure” bloggers and course creators try to sell beginner bloggers a lot of overpriced tools they don’t need instead of teaching them how to do things in WordPress.

They often tell them to buy things like LeadPages, ThriveLeads, or ClickFunnels to “easily” create “better” Landing Pages.

This can be done in GeneratePress without any other software or plugin.

Just build it like you would any other page on your site and disable all the elements, such as navigation menu, logo, top bar, and secondary navigation.

How to Access It: Go to the page where you want to disable the elements > Layout options > Disable elements > Check the elements you want to disable > Save

Boom!

You’ve got your Landing Page!

6. Elements

This is hands down… and up… and anywhere really, the best module in GeneratePress.

This module will allow you to add almost anything anywhere on your site with just three simple elements:

  • Block
  • Header
  • Hook

Block Element

The Block Element allows you to create anything you want using the block editor and then insert it anywhere on your site.

For example, the author box at the end of this article and on the sidebar (if you’re on desktop) were built using the Blocks Element.

So there’s no need to install another plugin like Fancier Author Box.

Author box
Author box

You could also use it to build and place call-to-actions at the end of your posts and design custom sidebars, footers, and/or headers.

Block Element custom sidebar

Block Element custom footer
Custom footer

You also have the option to create a custom 404 page and replace your blog category archive pages with custom ones.

404 Page
404 page

GeneratePress is really a very powerful and fast theme.

Header Element

The Header Element will allow you to add a custom header to your pages and blog posts.

This is awesome if you want to add a call-to-action header on your blog posts.

GeneratePress Page Hero Example
Header element

The cool thing is that you can select on which categories, tags, or individual posts you want to display it.

You can also create several different Header Elements for different categories.

For example, you could have one call-to-action header for your blog posts in the Weight Loss category and a different one for those in the Gym Workouts category.

You need to add some HTML and CSS, though.

But don’t worry, Tom has all the codes in GeneratePress’ documentation ready for you to just copy and paste them as well as step-by-step instructions on how to do it.

If you don’t feel like adding HTML and CSS, you can simply use the Block Element to create your header instead.

That way you don’t have to install plugins like Hero Banner Ultimate or Coded Hero Image to do it.

Pretty cool, huh?

Hook Element

The Hook Element is a great element that lets you customize your site without having to install a Child Theme or mess with your theme files.

For example, you could easily add your Google Analytics code or Pinterest’s meta tag using the Hook Element.

Inserting Google Analytics using the Hook Element
Google Analytics using hooks

Definitely a game changer.

You can also select where you want the elements displayed and in which order.

For example, if you want to have two elements in the footer, you can choose which one goes first.

7. Menu Plus

The next module in this GeneratePress review is the Menu Plus module.

This module allows you to customize your sticky navigation and mobile header, add site title to your navigation, activate a slide-out navigation, and more.

For example, you could disable the default stacked version of your mobile header and replace it with a streamlined version.

Normal mobile header
Normal mobile header
Inline mobile header
Inline mobile header

This is great for user experience and reducing bounce rate.

Mobile screens are tiny, so every little space where you can show the user actual content, counts.

Remember, when writing a blog post or designing a page, you always want to include the most important information above the fold.

If you have the default mobile header, and maybe an ad or disclaimer at the beginning of your post, you’ll push the content your user wants to see below the fold and they’ll bounce.

8. Secondary Navigation

Have you ever seen websites with a main menu and a different menu for their post’s categories and wonder how they do that?

Secondary navigation
Secondary navigation

Well, that’s what’s called a “secondary navigation” and can easily be done with GeneratePress.

The Secondary Navigation module will allow you to add another menu bar without having to use any code or plugins.

9. Sections

The next module in this GeneratePress review is the Sections module.

The Sections module is GeneratePress’ own simple page builder. If you’re using a page builder already, you don’t really need this.

10. Spacing

The Spacing module lets you control the sizes, padding, and margin of your elements.

Header padding
Header padding in green

For example, if you thought your sidebar is too close to your menu or main content, you could quickly add more space between them using this module.

This module also allows you to increase the spacing between menu items and footer widgets.

11. Typography

The typography module lets you change your font family, line height, font size, and font variants, such as bold, super bold, light, etc.

You can also change the typography for different elements, such as your body, header, navigation, buttons, headings, widgets, and footer.

How to Access It: Customize > Typography

 12. WooCommerce

To use the WooCommerce module, you need to have WooCommerce installed on your WordPress site.

This module will allow you to customize your store, product, and checkout pages’ layout, color, and typography settings.

13. Site Library

If you’re starting out and just want something quick to get your site running, GeneratePress’ premade templates are a great option.

GeneratePress Site Library
GeneratePress Site Library

One cool thing about the Site Library is that the filters on the top of the page let you sort through sites that are using Elementor, Beaver Builder, or No Page Builder.

You can also preview a live version of the templates by clicking on Preview.

To see how the theme will look on different devices (screen sizes), just click on the icons located at the top of the Preview screen.

Clicking on the Details button will open up a window where you can see all the plugins that a particular template uses.

After going through the different templates, you simply choose the one you like the most for your site.

Schema Built-In for Better SEO

Schema markup (also known as rich snippets) was developed by Google, Yahoo!, and Bing.

This is a code (semantic vocabulary) you put on your website to help search engines show more informative result for users.

Schema Markup in SERPs
Schema Markup in SERPs

Schema uses a unique semantic vocabulary to understand the information inside your web pages and displays it on search results.

This way, users can see in the search results things like how much products cost, event dates, locations, and more.

While there’s no evidence that it helps Google rankings, it does make your site stand out from others in the search results, which will increase your click-through rates (more traffic).

Not surprisingly, this study by SearchMetrics showed that less than one-third of Google search results include a rich snippet with Schema.

So using Schema will give you an edge over your competition.

The cool thing about GeneratePress is that you don’t have to worry about adding any code or installing a plugin since it is already built-in.

Site Library Templates – GeneratePress Examples

In this section of the GeneratePress review, we’ll go over some of the templates available in the Site Library.

Note on GeneratePress Templates

Just because some of these templates are labeled as “great for this or that,” doesn’t mean you can’t use it for any other type of website.

If you feel like a “photography” template has all the features you want, but you have a finance blog, don’t worry, go ahead and use it.

Those labels are just there as an example, not a rule.

Lastly, there a plenty of other templates you can check out by visiting their Site Library.

Support and Documentation

Earlier in this GeneratePress review, I briefly mentioned their great support and documentation.

Now, it’s time to take a closer look at these two features.

Support

A few months ago, Tom and I were having a little trouble with a code for adding a “Related Posts” section on my blog.

We were going back and forth trying to debug the code.

After a couple of days without any luck, I told Tom that it wasn’t a big deal and to just leave it.

But stubborn Tom kept trying to figure out what was wrong and finally made it work.

Notice that this wasn’t even a problem with the theme, which is why I told him to not worry about it. I didn’t want him to waste his time on it.

And this wasn’t a one-time thing, Tom and the GeneratePress team are always helping people out, even those with the free version of the theme.

Documentation

If you’re a beginner blogger, you’ll find GeneratePress’ documentation extremely useful.

They cover almost anything you’d want to do with your site.

If what you want requires some coding, chances are it’s already on there with a step-by-step guide.

All you have to do is follow the guide and copy and paste the code.

GeneratePress Documentation
GeneratePress Documentation

Another cool thing is that since GeneratePress has been around for more than 6 years, there are a lot of questions answered on their forum as well.

You can simply google your question, and links to their forum should be the first ones to show up.

In fact, I look on Google before looking at their documentation.

Most of the time, I’m able to find an answer to my question in the GeneratePress support forum.

And if you can’t find an answer, you can simply submit a support ticket and they’ll get back to you as soon as possible.

Best Plugins for GeneratePress

In this section of the GeneratePress review, we’ll go over a few plugins that work great with the theme.

1. GenerateBlocks (Builder)

The first one on the list is GenerateBlocks.

This plugin helps you build your WordPress site without bloating it and slowing it down.

It lets you add your own SVG icons and change things like typography, spacing, colors, gradients, and backgrounds.

In fact, I used this in combination with WordPress’ default editor, Gutenberg Blocks, to build both of my sites.

This plugin was developed by Tom himself, so you can be confident that it’s going to be well-coded and work great with GeneratePress.

However, I’d say it is a little too basic for beginners who require more customization.

Therefore, if you’re a beginner, I recommend you pair GeneratePress with Atomic Blocks instead.

Don’t worry, both of these plugins are free.

Price: Free – Pro version starts at $39/year for one site.

2. WP Show Posts (Blog Posts)

WP Show Post is another plugin developed by Tom that goes really well with GeneratePress.

This plugin allows you to display your blog posts anywhere on your site using a shortcode or function.

I used the pro version (WP Show Post Pro) to create all of my blog post’s category pages (silos) and add a “Related Posts” section at the end of my blog posts.

Price: Free – $25 Pro version

3. WP Rocket (Performance)

WP Rocket is probably the best overall caching plugin to improve your site speed.

Not only that, but it’s really easy for beginners to set up, so they won’t end up breaking their sites.

Most of the time someone tells me that something isn’t working properly on their site, it’s usually a caching plugin issue.

I’d use it on every web server except LiteSpeed, if you’re on LiteSpeed, use LiteSpeed Cache instead, which is free.

And yes, I’d even use it on SiteGround instead of their SG Optimizer and on Cloudways instead of their Breeze plugin.

Price: $49 for one year of updates and support. They also offer a 30% renewal discount.

4. Novashare (Social media share icons)

If site speed is what you’re after, and you like having social share icons to encourage readers to share your stuff, Novashare is a great lightweight plugin for this.

The plugin was developed by Brian Jackson – former CMO at Kinsta – and I like it because it:

  • Doesn’t load scripts where it shoudn’t. (social share plugins tend to load on every page of your site, even those where you’re not using them)
  • Uses inline SVG icons, so there are no extra libraries or DNS lookups needed for just the icons.
  • Uses custom tables to store your data so it doesn’t fill up your site’s wp_options table and slows your site.

It also includes a Click to Tweet block, Pinterest image hover pins, customization options, and more good stuff.

Price: Plans start at $29.95 per year for one site and a 15% renewal discount.

5. Simple CSS (Adding CSS)

This plugin allows you to easily add CSS into a nice-looking editor in your WordPress Dashboard without having to create any files or do any other complicated process.

Another cool thing about this plugin is that it adds a meta box on each individual page. This allows you to enter CSS that only applies to that specific page.

And in case you’re wondering… yes, it was also developed by Tom.

Price: Free

6. The SEO Framework

SEO plugins tend to add a ton of features that you may or may not be using, which can obviously take a toll on your site speed.

The SEO Framework is a great SEO plugin that allows you to disable the features you aren’t using.

Another solid option is SEOPress.

Price: Free

Pricing

GeneratePress Premium was actually $49.95, but they recently increased the price.

What’s funny is that users were actually happy about it, and some even think it’s still too cheap – myself included.

Here’s how it went when Stacey (Tom’s wife) introduced the new pricing for GeneratePress.

GeneratePress pricing comments
GeneratePress pricing comments 2

People typically complain when companies increase their prices, but not GeneratePress users.

That’s when you know you have a great product.

The premium version of GeneratePress is $59 and includes the 13 modules, one year of support and updates, and can be used on 500 websites.

In fact, I’m currently using it on both of my websites.

They also have a 30-day money-back guarantee so you can test it out and get a refund if you think it’s not the right theme for you.

If you want to keep getting support and updates, you’d have to renew your license.

However, if you don’t want to renew your license, you can still keep using GeneratePress Premium forever, only difference is that you won’t get support and updates.

They also introduced a new lifetime plan that’s a one-time payment of $249.

Testimonials and Reviews

“Christian, all of this is great, but what do other people think about the GeneratePress theme?”

Well, I’m glad you asked!

Here’s what people in different platforms have been saying about GeneratePress:

GeneratePress Rating – WordPress.org

If you check GeneratePress reviews on WordPress.org, you’ll find that it has a 5-star rating.

Not 4… not 4 ½… but 5 stars.

It has over one thousand 5-star reviews and only three 1-star reviews.

And those 1-star reviews are misunderstandings that were address by Tom himself.

GeneratePress Cons

No review is complete without a list of cons, and this GeneratePress review is no exception.

One of the disadvantages of GeneratePress is that the free version is very limited, so you’ll have to jump on the premium version if you really want to get the most out of the theme and all its awesomeness.

The price is really cheap, though, so it’s still a great deal.

Another disadvantage is that it’s a “sole developer” theme. There’s no big company supporting it.

So if something ever happens to Tom, we might be screwed.

GeneratePress Discount Code

If there’s ever a discount on GeneratePress, it’ll clearly be displayed on their website.

Other unofficial coupon sites list fake discount codes to get traffic.

Other FAQ About GeneratePress

1. Is GeneratePress Free?

Final Thoughts on GeneratePress Review

GeneratePress is definitely one of the best options for those looking to improve the speed and usability of their websites.

Now that Google has officially said that page speed is a ranking factor, switching to a fast theme is a must if you want to increase your traffic and build authority in your niche.

Not only is the GeneratePress theme lightweight and fast, but it’s mobile responsive and has schema built-in.

Which, as I mentioned earlier, is going to be great for making your site stand out among others in the search engine results.

At only $59, GeneratePress is cheaper and better than other “premium” and slower themes like Divi, which is $89.99 per year.

Plus, you get to use the GeneratePress theme on 500 websites.

The support you get from Tom and the team is definitely worth every penny.

I honestly cannot recommend it enough.

I hope you enjoyed this GeneratePress review.

  2. This was really great information! Thank you for breaking this down so much. I know I have issues with site speed and was looking into changing themes. But it gets so overwhelming! I will definitely be looking into this theme.
